What is the Animated Email Banner Maker?

Animated GIFs are the one kind of motion that works in almost every email client. This free tool builds a banner from a few frames, shows how big the GIF will be while you edit, and exports the GIF, a still fallback image and the HTML to place it. It runs entirely in your browser: no account, no upload, no watermark.

From template to email-ready GIF in five steps

The preview plays exactly the frames and timing that go into the GIF.

01

Pick a template

Start from one of 6 original layouts: a sale, a product launch, an event, a deadline, a newsletter header or an app launch.

02

Edit the frames

Change the text, colors, backgrounds and button for each frame, add a product image or logo, and set how long each one shows.

03

Make frame 1 count

Some email clients show only the first frame, so the tool keeps reminding you to put the offer there and lets you preview exactly that.

04

Watch the size

The meter shows the GIF's size as you edit, then its exact size moments later, and suggests what to change when you go over your budget.

05

Export

Download the GIF, a still PNG or JPG of frame 1, and copy an HTML snippet with your alt text and link.

How it works, and what it can't do

How the GIF is built, and why the numbers come out the way they do.

How the GIF is made

Each frame is drawn on a canvas in your browser, then a background worker reduces it to a palette of 32 to 256 colors and encodes it. Still slides are one GIF frame with a long delay; only transitions need in-between frames, at the smoothness you choose.

Why the files stay small

After the first frame, pixels that didn't change are stored as transparent, so the previous frame shows through. A banner where only the text changes stores little more than the text. Flat colors, fewer frames and Cut transitions keep files smallest.

How the size meter works

While you edit, it shows an instant estimate from how busy each frame is and how much changes between frames, fitted to real encodes. About a second after you stop editing, the real GIF is created in the background and the meter switches to its exact size; that's also the file you download.

What it cannot do

It can't make a live countdown timer (that needs a server generating the image on open), add real links inside the image (use the HTML snippet's link), or keep photos looking perfect, because GIF is limited to 256 colors per frame. It can't check how each email client renders your message; send yourself a test.

Three common campaigns

Illustrative: each matches a template in the tool above, so you can open it and see the settings.

A weekend sale

The Sale template: the offer, code and button sit on frame 1, then two short frames add the deadline and free shipping. Fades between frames on the same gradient keep it small.

A webinar invite

The Event template slides up through the date, the topic and “free and recorded”. Frame 1 alone still works as a complete invitation where GIFs don't play.

A deadline reminder

The Ends soon template uses Cut transitions and a short bright flash frame. Cuts add no in-between frames, so this is one of the smallest banners you can make.

Frequently asked questions

Why use a GIF for animation in email?

Email clients don't run JavaScript and most ignore video and CSS animation, but nearly all of them display GIFs. An animated GIF is the most reliable way to add motion to a newsletter or campaign.

Which email clients show only the first frame?

Older Outlook for Windows desktop versions (2007 to 2016, and some 2019 installs) show only the first frame of an animated GIF. Newer Microsoft 365 builds, the new Outlook, Gmail and Apple Mail play the animation. That's why the tool asks you to put the main message and button in frame 1, and lets you preview it alone.

How big should an email GIF be?

Many email senders recommend keeping a GIF under about 1 MB so it loads quickly on mobile data; smaller is better. The tool's budget meter defaults to 1 MB and you can change it. A 600 px wide banner with 3 or 4 flat-color frames usually lands well under that. Keep the whole loop short, around 5 to 10 seconds.

What width should an email banner be?

600 px wide is the common email layout width, which is why it's the default. Export at 2× (1200 px) for sharp results on Retina screens; the HTML snippet still displays it at 600 px. 2× files are about four times bigger, so watch the meter.

Why is alt text required?

Many inboxes block images until the reader allows them, and screen readers can't read text inside an image. The alt text is what those readers see or hear instead, so write the offer itself, for example "Autumn Sale: 30% off everything with code AUTUMN30".

Is it free, and what happens to my images?

It's free with no signup and no watermark. Everything, including GIF encoding, happens in your browser; your text and images are never uploaded to our server.

Can I use the banners commercially?

Yes. The templates are original and the fonts are open-licensed (SIL Open Font License), so you can use your banners in any campaign without attribution. Make sure you have the rights to images you upload.

How it works, data handling & limitations
How it works
Frames are drawn on a canvas in the browser. A web worker reduces each frame to 32 to 256 colors (gifenc), optionally dithers it, and stores unchanged pixels as transparent so the previous frame shows through. The size meter shows an estimate fitted to real encodes, then the exact size of a background encode, which is also the downloaded file.
Data & privacy
Your text, images and GIF stay in your browser. The tool does not upload them to our server, store them in a database or log downloads. Site analytics, ads and normal page requests still apply.
How we evaluate/test it
The frame timeline, GIF delays, pixel-difference and palette mapping, dithering, the size estimator and a full encode have automated tests. Templates were encoded and checked in Chrome on desktop; there is no automated test across email clients.
Limitations
Until the background encode finishes, the size shown is an estimate that can be off by a third or more for 2× or dithered banners. GIF allows 256 colors per frame, so photos and gradients can band. Some Outlook for Windows versions show only the first frame. There is no live countdown, and text inside the image is not readable by screen readers, so the alt text matters.
