Type Indian languages without changing your keyboard

Switching to a native Indian keyboard layout is a significant cognitive overhead — you need to memorise an entirely different key mapping. Phonetic typing removes this barrier entirely. You type the sounds you already know in English, and the tool produces the correct native script automatically.

This is especially useful for people who grew up speaking an Indian language but learned to read and write primarily in English. It's also ideal for content creators, teachers, and businesses who occasionally need to produce text in Hindi, Punjabi, Tamil, or other Indian languages without permanently changing their system keyboard.

The tool covers ten Indian languages — Hindi, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, Bengali, Gujarati, Marathi, Kannada, Malayalam, and Urdu — collectively representing over 900 million speakers. Each language uses its own Unicode script, which is fully supported across iOS, Android, Windows, macOS, WhatsApp, and Google Docs.

Frequently asked questions

Is this Indian language typing tool completely free?

Yes — all 10 languages, all features, and all exports are free with no login or account required. There are no premium tiers, no watermarks, and no limits.

How does the phonetic transliteration work?

You type words in English phonetically — for example, typing "namaste" and pressing Space converts it to "नमस्ते" in Hindi. The tool uses Google's Input Tools transliteration engine, the same technology behind Google Keyboard for Android.

Which Indian languages are supported?

Hindi (Devanagari), Punjabi (Gurmukhi), Tamil, Telugu, Bengali, Gujarati, Marathi (Devanagari), Kannada, Malayalam, and Urdu (Nastaliq, right-to-left). Together these cover over 900 million speakers.

Do I need to install a keyboard or any software?

No. Everything runs in your browser. No keyboard layout changes, no app downloads, no browser extensions. Just open the page and start typing.

What happens when I press the spacebar?

When you press Space after typing a word, it is automatically transliterated to the selected Indian script. The top suggestion is inserted and up to 4 alternative suggestions appear below as clickable chips — click any chip to use that variant instead.

Can I type in Urdu?

Yes. Select the Urdu tab and type phonetically in English. The output appears in Nastaliq script, right-to-left, as Urdu is naturally written. The text area switches direction automatically.

How do I copy my typed text?

Click the "Copy Output" button. The full converted text is copied to your clipboard. The button briefly shows "Copied ✓" to confirm. You can then paste it into WhatsApp, Word, email, social media — anywhere that accepts Unicode text.

Can I download the typed text?

Yes. The "Download .txt" button saves your output as a UTF-8 encoded plain text file. Open it in any text editor, Word, or share it directly. The file contains no watermark.

Will the Indian script text paste correctly everywhere?

Indian scripts are Unicode and are supported by all modern operating systems (Windows 10+, macOS, iOS, Android), all major browsers, WhatsApp, Word, Google Docs, and most social media platforms. Older applications or print software may require the appropriate font to be installed.

Is my typed text stored or logged anywhere?

No. Your input and output are processed entirely in the browser (or anonymously proxied to Google's transliteration API without identification). Nothing you type is stored on our servers.
