What is the SVG Line Draw Animator?

The line drawing effect makes the outlines of an SVG appear as if drawn by a pen, a common touch for logos, signatures, icons and hero illustrations. This free tool sets it up for any SVG and exports code that works without JavaScript or libraries. It runs entirely in your browser: no account, no upload, no watermark.

From static SVG to drawing animation in five steps

The preview restarts with every change, so you always see the result from the first frame.

01

Add an SVG

Paste the code, upload an .svg file, or start with one of three samples. The file is cleaned of anything unsafe first.

02

Choose what draws

Every drawable shape is listed. Untick the ones that should stay still and drag the rest into the order you want.

03

Set the timing

Draw everything together, stagger the starts, or draw one shape after another like a pen. Pick an easing and a direction.

04

Finish the look

Fade fills in after the lines are drawn, loop with a pause, or override the stroke color, width and line cap.

05

Export

Download a self-contained animated SVG, copy HTML and CSS or a React component, or render an MP4, WebM or transparent PNG sequence for video.

How it works, and what it can't do

What happens to your SVG and why the exported code behaves the way it does.

How the effect works

Each outline gets a dash exactly as long as the shape (measured with the browser's getTotalLength), followed by a gap. Animating stroke-dashoffset from the gap to zero slides the dash into place, so the line appears to draw itself. It's plain CSS, so the exported files need no JavaScript.

Why transformed shapes still work

Dash lengths are measured in each shape's own coordinate space, the same space the dashes are drawn in, so scale and rotate transforms on a shape or its groups need no correction. A shape's pathLength attribute is respected too.

How video is made

A running CSS animation can't be captured frame by frame, so for video the tool recalculates every frame from the same timing and easing maths as the CSS, draws it at full size, and encodes it in your browser: H.264 for MP4, VP9 for WebM (with a separate transparency stream when you choose a transparent background).

How your SVG is cleaned

Input runs through DOMPurify's SVG profile, which removes scripts, event handlers and embedded HTML (foreignObject). A second pass removes links and CSS url() references that point outside the file, so the export can't load anything from elsewhere.

What it cannot do

It doesn't draw text (convert it to outlines first) or raster images, and it can't animate shapes inside <use> references individually. Shapes with vector-effect: non-scaling-stroke may draw at the wrong speed. Existing SMIL animations in the file are removed. MOV with alpha (ProRes 4444) can't be encoded in a browser, so the PNG sequence is offered instead.

Three ways to use it

Illustrative: each matches one of the samples in the tool above, so you can load it and see the settings.

Logo reveal on a landing page

Load the Logo mark sample with Stagger. The ring, letter and dot draw in turn, then the HTML + CSS export goes into a hero section or a Webflow Embed.

Signature at the end of a letter

Load the Signature line sample with One by one and Linear easing, so the pen moves at a steady speed like real handwriting, then underlines it.

Illustration that fills in

Load the Illustration sample. Filled shapes get an outline in their own color, draw, and then their fills fade in once each line is finished.

Frequently asked questions

How does the SVG line drawing effect work?

Each outline is given a dash as long as the whole shape, followed by a gap. At the start, the gap covers the shape, so nothing shows. Animating stroke-dashoffset to zero slides the dash into place, so the line appears to draw itself. The tool measures every shape for you and writes the CSS.

Is it free, and what happens to my SVG?

It's free with no signup and no watermark. Your SVG is cleaned, previewed and exported in your browser and is never uploaded to our server.

Why do filled shapes need a stroke?

The effect animates outlines (strokes). A shape with only a fill has no outline to draw, so it would simply appear. The tool can add a stroke to those shapes in their own fill color, draw it, and then fade the fill in afterwards.

Can I use it in Webflow or WordPress?

Yes. Copy the HTML + CSS export and paste it into a Webflow Embed element or a WordPress Custom HTML block. Or upload the animated .svg file and use it as an image; the animation is inside the file, so it plays wherever SVG images are allowed. Some WordPress setups block SVG uploads, in which case use the HTML option.

Which browsers support the exported animation?

All current browsers: Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari on desktop and mobile. The output is plain CSS animation of stroke-dashoffset with no JavaScript. Visitors who turn on reduced motion in their system settings see the finished drawing instead.

Can I export the animation as a video?

Yes. The Video panel renders MP4 (H.264) on a background color, WebM that's either transparent or on a color, or a ZIP of transparent PNG frames, at up to 4K and 60 fps. MOV with an alpha channel (ProRes 4444) can't be encoded in a browser; the PNG sequence is the transparent format Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve and After Effects import instead.

Why does my text not animate?

Line drawing works on shapes: paths, lines, polylines, polygons, circles, ellipses and rectangles. Text elements aren't drawn as outlines. In Figma or Illustrator, convert the text to outlines (Outline stroke or Create outlines) before exporting the SVG.

Is my SVG safe to paste?

The tool cleans every SVG before showing it: scripts, event handlers, embedded HTML and links or CSS that point outside the file are removed, and it tells you how many items it took out. That also means the exported file can't load anything from another website.

Can I use the animations commercially?

Yes. The generated CSS and code are yours to use in client, commercial and personal projects without attribution. The rights to the artwork itself stay with whoever owns the SVG you start from.

How it works, data handling & limitations
How it works
SVG input is cleaned with DOMPurify and a second pass that removes external references. The browser measures each shape with getTotalLength, and the tool writes a dash-offset CSS keyframe per shape. Preview and every code export use the same generated CSS, with no JavaScript in the output. Video frames are recalculated from the same timing maths, drawn at full size and encoded in the browser with WebCodecs (packaged by mediabunny); PNG sequences are zipped with JSZip.
Data & privacy
Your SVG stays in your browser. The tool does not upload it to our server, store it in a database or log downloads. External links inside the SVG are removed before preview, so it loads nothing from elsewhere. Site analytics, ads and normal page requests still apply.
How we evaluate/test it
Timing (together, stagger and one-by-one), easing, dash values, the generated CSS and React code, and the sanitizer settings have automated tests. Exports were checked in Chrome on desktop; there is no automated test in every browser or site builder.
Limitations
Text, raster images and shapes inside <use> references are not drawn individually; convert text to outlines first. Shapes with non-scaling strokes may draw at the wrong speed. Existing SMIL animations are removed, and complex CSS in the original file may interact with the added animation. MP4 and WebM need a browser with the matching video encoder (current Chrome and Edge have both); MOV with alpha can't be made in a browser.
