How to import into your editor
- Premiere Pro: unzip the PNG sequence, choose File › Import, select the first PNG and tick Image Sequence. Recent versions also open WebM, but transparency support depends on your version.
- DaVinci Resolve: drag the unzipped folder into the Media Pool; it imports the PNGs as one clip with transparency. Place it on a track above your footage.
- Final Cut Pro: it doesn't open WebM. Convert the PNG sequence to a ProRes 4444 clip (for example with Compressor's image sequence option), then import that.
- OBS Studio: add a Media Source and pick the WebM file; OBS plays VP9 transparency.
- Other editors: if the WebM shows a black background, use the PNG sequence or the single PNG as an overlay.

What is the Lower Thirds Maker?
A lower third is the caption strip that names the person speaking, usually in the lower part of the frame. This free tool lets you design one, animate it in and out, and export it as a transparent overlay you can place above any footage. It runs entirely in your browser: no account, no upload, no watermark.

// How It Works
From name to transparent overlay in five steps
Every change updates the preview instantly. Nothing is rendered on a server.
Pick a template
Start from one of 8 original styles. Each one opens with sample text so you can see the motion straight away.
Type your text
Add the name, title and an optional tag such as Guest or Live. Upload a PNG or SVG logo if you want one.
Style and time it
Set colors, font, size, corners and position, then choose the in and out animations and how long it holds on screen.
Check it over footage
Play it over the sample video still or the transparency checkerboard, scrub the timeline and loop it.
Export
Download a transparent WebM, a PNG sequence that works in every editor, or a single PNG of the hold frame.

What the tool does, and what it can't
How the export is made, so you know what you'll get in your editor.
What it makes
A short animated overlay: the lower third animates in, holds, and animates out, on a fully transparent background. The first and last frames are empty so the clip cuts in and out cleanly.
How the frames are made
Every frame is drawn on a canvas from its frame number, not recorded in real time, so the export has exactly duration × frame rate frames and matches the preview.
How the video is encoded
The browser's built-in video encoder (WebCodecs) compresses the colour and the transparency as two VP9 streams, and a small library packages them into one WebM file with alpha, the layout OBS and Chromium read. PNG sequences are encoded and zipped in the browser.
What it cannot do
It doesn't export MP4 or ProRes, add audio, or animate per word. WebM export needs a browser with a VP9 video encoder (current Chrome and Edge have one); otherwise you get the PNG sequence. Editors differ in how they read WebM transparency, so check the clip in your editor before a deadline.
// Examples
Three common setups
Illustrative: these previews are drawn live by the tool's own templates over a sample backdrop. Names are made up.
Interview or podcast
Side accent with the speaker's initial, sliding in from the left. Export the PNG sequence for Premiere or Resolve and drop it on the track above the interview.
Livestream in OBS
Two-line news style with a Live tag. Export WebM in Chrome and add it to OBS as a Media Source; transparency plays as is.
Vertical social clip
Pill tag at 1080 × 1920, placed bottom left, so it stays clear of the captions most apps put in the middle of the screen.

// FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Is the Lower Thirds Maker free?
Yes. Every template and every export (WebM, PNG sequence and single PNG) is free, with no signup, no daily limit and no watermark.
What happens to my text and logo?
They stay on your device. The preview and every export are rendered and encoded in your browser tab; nothing is uploaded to our server and downloads are not logged. Site analytics, ads and normal page requests still apply.
Which video formats support a transparent background?
This tool exports WebM with VP9 and an alpha channel, plus a PNG sequence where every frame is a transparent PNG. Standard MP4 (H.264) can't store transparency, which is why it isn't offered. Professional alternatives like ProRes 4444 need desktop software.
Which editors can use the transparent WebM?
OBS Studio plays VP9 transparency from a Media Source, and Chromium browsers do too. Support in Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve and other editors depends on the version, and Final Cut Pro doesn't open WebM. If you see a black background, use the PNG sequence, which every major editor imports with transparency.
How do I use the PNG sequence?
Unzip it, then import the folder as one clip. In Premiere Pro, choose File › Import, select the first PNG and tick Image Sequence. In DaVinci Resolve, drag the folder into the Media Pool. Put the clip on a track above your footage. The files are numbered from _0001 so they stay in order.
Why don't I see the WebM option?
The WebM export uses your browser's built-in VP9 video encoder. The tool checks for it before showing the option: current Chrome and Edge have it, and some other browsers don't. Without it you can still export the PNG sequence and single PNG with full transparency.
Can I use the lower thirds in commercial videos?
Yes. The templates are original to this site and the fonts are open-licensed (SIL Open Font License), so you can use your exports in client, commercial and monetised videos without attribution. Make sure you have the rights to any logo you upload.
Why is it free?
Because it runs in your browser, each export costs nothing to serve. The page is supported by the ads on it.

How it works, data handling & limitations
- How it works
- Each frame is drawn on a browser canvas from its frame number, so the export has exactly duration × frame rate frames. For WebM, the browser's WebCodecs encoder compresses colour and transparency as two VP9 streams, which mediabunny packages into one WebM file with alpha; PNG sequences are encoded and zipped in the browser with JSZip.
- Data & privacy
- Your text, logo and exports stay in your browser. The tool does not upload them to our server or store them in a database, and it does not log downloads. Fonts are served from this site. Site analytics, ads and normal page requests still apply.
- How we evaluate/test it
- The timing math (easing, phases, frame counts and file numbering) has automated tests. WebM transparency support is detected in the browser before the option is shown. Exports were checked in Chrome on desktop; there is no automated test across every video editor.
- Limitations
- WebM export needs a browser that can encode VP9 video (Chrome and Edge can; the tool checks before showing the option), otherwise the PNG sequence is offered. Editors differ in reading WebM alpha, and Final Cut Pro needs the PNG sequence converted first. There is no MP4, ProRes or audio export, and long 4K exports can run out of browser memory.

Changelog
- Launched with 8 templates, five in and out animations, transparent WebM (VP9 alpha), PNG sequence and single PNG export at four resolutions and four frame rates.
